RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
