Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
