The artist has given the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which functions to save the Britain's independent concert spaces.

The star was given the cheque on October 16 as his new release his work was named the top album of the past year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous small stages across Britain.

These funds assisted spaces that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues stemming from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted monetary aid in upgrading amenities and gear that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from shows in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

"Additionally, I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," the artist told the media.

In recent years, the band gave their winnings to the local youth club that supported their act, in addition to other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients the group contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated singer Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had rescued several small stages in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in the city and the second in the city were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
